Why this matters under SA law
Under section 69(3) of the Residential Tenancies Act 1995 (SA), a tenant must leave the premises in a reasonable state of cleanliness. Built-up grease and burnt-on residue in the oven, rangehood and cooktop is the single most common item Adelaide agents claim as 'not reasonably clean' at handover. Fair wear and tear is allowed, but ordinary accumulated grease is not normally treated as fair wear and tear. Where the bond is most often lost
- Across SA agent inspection reports, the oven and rangehood are the most frequently flagged items at the end of a tenancy. Failing here is the most common reason an otherwise good clean is rejected.
- Self-cleaning / pyrolytic ovens still need the manual wipe-down inside the door glass, racks and seal after the cycle. Most renters miss that step and lose marks at inspection.
- Rangehood filters are usually behind a clip-release housing. They look fine from below but the topside of the mesh is where the grease lives. Agents check this.
- A scoped oven or kitchen invoice is your evidence: you paid for a defined oven clean, the photos show the result, any later claim has to be tested against that.

Cleaners can either run the cycle for you (4-5 hours, kitchen will be hot and slightly smoky) or handle the manual wipe-down after you have run it. Discuss this when you request a quote.
Will harsh chemicals damage the oven or stove?
Reputable Adelaide cleaners use non-caustic degreasers that are safer for the enamel coating, the rubber seal, and the cook's lungs. If a cleaner is using bright-blue caustic spray on a hot oven in a small kitchen, that is a red flag. Ask which products they use and how long they soak racks for.
